Electricity and lighting

The breaker or RCD trips. What can I check without opening anything?

A trip signals a problem; it does not prove the protective device itself needs replacing.

NAPREMO guide · Updated: 4 November 2026.

What you can do

  1. Record what was running and which rooms lost power.
  2. Switch off the suspected appliance. Unplug only if the socket, cable and surroundings are dry, cool and undamaged.
  3. Leave the affected circuit off pending assessment. Photograph the closed distribution board only if access is safe.

How to tell whether it helped

Your observations help diagnosis but do not establish electrical safety. Do not repeatedly reconnect a suspect appliance to test it.

When to stop

Stop for repeated trips, moisture, sparks or a burning smell. Do not bypass protection or fit a higher-rated device yourself.

How NAPREMO can help

Describe the symptoms to NAPREMO. Electrical assessment and work require a suitably qualified person.
