Electricity and lighting

A socket is hot, sparking or smells burnt. What should I do?

Stop using it. Plugging in another appliance is not a safe test.

NAPREMO guide · Updated: 4 November 2026.

What you can do

  1. Isolate the affected circuit only from a dry safe position without approaching the damaged point.
  2. Do not touch a hot, melted or sparking socket, or force out a fused plug.
  3. For smoke, fire or immediate danger, keep clear and call 112. Do not pour water on electrical equipment.

How to tell whether it helped

Cooling down or losing its smell does not mean the fault is repaired. Proper assessment is needed before reuse.

When to stop

Do not turn the circuit back on just because the socket has cooled.

How NAPREMO can help

Once the situation is safe, an electrician must assess it. You can report repairs to NAPREMO; a form is not an emergency call.
