Gardens and green spaces

Newly planted shrubs are wilting. Should I add more water?

Not necessarily: roots may be dry beneath a damp surface, but too much water also causes problems.

NAPREMO guide · Updated: 4 November 2026.

What you can do

  1. Check moisture near the root ball without tearing roots, and note any standing water.
  2. Water the root zone according to soil moisture, weather and species rather than adding the same daily dose.
  3. Record the planting date, watering routine and whether the plant came in a pot.

How to tell whether it helped

Track root-zone moisture and the plant's condition over the following days. Failure to improve does not automatically call for more water.

When to stop

Stop and seek assessment for persistent waterlogging, rapid decline or no improvement. Fertiliser is not a universal cure.

How NAPREMO can help

NAPREMO green can assess planting conditions and care. Photograph the whole plant and the soil around its base.
