Moisture and bathrooms

The silicone around the bath has cracked. Can I add another layer?

Fresh silicone over a detached old joint does not restore its bond. Movement of the bath or tray can also cause cracking.

NAPREMO guide · Updated: 4 November 2026.

What you can do

  1. Check that the bath or tray is stable and moisture has not spread beyond the joint. Do not flood the gap as a test.
  2. For a simple accessible joint, remove the old sealant without damaging the surfaces. Clean and dry using a method suitable for both materials.
  3. Apply a compatible sealant as a continuous joint, finish it and observe its stated curing conditions before water contact.

How to tell whether it helped

The cured joint should be continuous and bonded to both edges. Recurring cracks need their cause checked.

When to stop

Stop if the bath moves, moisture is behind panels or on the other side of the wall, or the joint repeatedly fails.

How NAPREMO can help

NAPREMO can assess the cause and prepare the joint when removal or sealing is difficult.
