How do I mulch shrubs without harming them?

Mulch reduces drying and some weeds, but must not bury stems or replace watering a dry rootball.

NAPREMO guide · Updated: 4 November 2026.

What you can do

  1. Remove weeds and check moisture; water if needed. Avoid frozen or waterlogged soil.
  2. Choose material for the plants and soil. Around 5-7.5 cm is a starting point for typical organic mulch, not every plant.
  3. Keep trunks and stem bases clear. Do not heap mulch against bark or bury low plants.

How to tell whether it helped

Check moisture below the mulch and that irrigation reaches soil while stems remain clear.

When to stop

Rot at stems, standing water or unidentified plants need a different care assessment.

How NAPREMO can help

NAPREMO GREEN can weed beds, select mulch and spread it with space around plants.
