Fixings, furniture and painting

Paint is peeling off the wall. Will primer solve it?

Primer will not securely reattach a failing paint layer. New paint needs a sound, clean, suitably dry surface.

NAPREMO guide · Updated: 4 November 2026.

What you can do

  1. Check whether paint, filler or plaster is coming away and look for damp patches.
  2. On a small dry accessible area, remove loose paint, clean and remove dust. Repair defects and prime only as the chosen products require.
  3. Let the prepared layers dry, then test painting a small area before doing the whole wall.

How to tell whether it helped

The new coating should not detach with the old layer. Remaining dust or crumbling material means preparation is incomplete.

When to stop

Stop for dampness, mould, deeply crumbling plaster or widespread detachment. Do not cover it with more paint.

How NAPREMO can help

NAPREMO can assess which layers need removal and prepare the wall. Find and resolve moisture problems before repainting.
