Taps, sinks and drains

The drain smells after a long absence. Where do I start?

The water seal in an unused trap can dry out, but this is not the only possible cause.

NAPREMO guide · Updated: 4 November 2026.

What you can do

  1. If the drain is clear, add water to replenish the trap.
  2. Clean the accessible strainer or removable insert according to its manual.
  3. Note whether the smell returns after flushing the toilet or using another appliance.

How to tell whether it helped

A dry trap should stop letting smells through once refilled. Rapid recurrence needs further investigation.

When to stop

Stop if smells return quickly, drains gurgle, joints leak or wastewater backs up. More chemical cleaner will not fix every cause.

How NAPREMO can help

NAPREMO can assess the trap and connection. In a shared building, report possible stack problems to the manager too.
