Buildings and shared areas

The gutter overflows in rain. What can I check from the ground?

Ground-level observations can locate the visible overflow, but cannot prove that the entire system is clear.

NAPREMO guide · Updated: 4 November 2026.

What you can do

  1. From a safe position, identify overflow at an edge, joint or downpipe.
  2. Remove only loose debris outside an accessible outlet that you can easily reach from the ground.
  3. When dangerous weather has passed, photograph the area and the whole section of wall.

How to tell whether it helped

After cleaning or repair, observe the next rainfall from the ground. Continued overflow may need further assessment.

When to stop

Stop for hanging gutter parts, water near electrical equipment or work requiring a roof or ladder. Do not lean out of a window.
